Jerry Seinfeld Can No Longer Be About Nothing
  + stars: | 2024-05-04 | by ( Matt Flegenheimer | Marc Tracy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Jerry Seinfeld became a mic-cradling, cereal-eating, “did-you-ever-notice”-ing avatar of American Jewish life with a brazenly shrugging persona: a merry indifference to weighty material as a comedian and in his megahit TV show about nothing, as petty and apolitical as he seemed to be. Now — off-camera, at least — Mr. Seinfeld appears to have reached his post-nothing period. Since the attacks of Oct. 7 in Israel, and through their bloody and volatile aftermath in Gaza, Mr. Seinfeld, 70, has emerged as a strikingly public voice against antisemitism and in support of Jews in Israel and the United States, edging warily toward a more forward-facing advocacy role than he ever seemed to seek across his decades of fame. He has shared reflections about life on a kibbutz in his teens, and in December traveled to Tel Aviv to meet with hostages’ families, soberly recounting afterward the missile attack that greeted him during the trip. He has participated, to a point, in the kind of celebrity activism with which few associate him — letter-signing campaigns, earnest messages on social media — answering simply recently when asked about the motivation for his visit to Israel: “I’m Jewish.”

He Had Her at the Baby Moose

In June 2021, Francis Charles Marley checked out Ashleé Michele Miller’s Match.com profile, but clicked away without so much as a like. She would have let it go if the app hadn’t pictured him cradling a baby moose in the middle of a raging Alaskan river. Ms. Miller, 35, was riding out the pandemic at her parents’ house in Reidsville, N.C., when Mr. Marley thumbed past her profile. In New York, where she had lived since 2006, sorting through men had started to feel like a part-time job. But in North Carolina, “my mom said, ‘You have to keep dating,’” she said.

When I got breast cancer, after processing my diagnosis for myself, I had to tell my four kids. AdvertisementMy four children were eight, six, four, and 10 months old when I learned I had breast cancer. I went to many appointments, learned more about my breast cancer type and stage, and prepared to make the decision between getting a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. It was during this decision time that I revealed to my children that I had breast cancer. When I got cancer for a second time, I was honest with them againUnfortunately, three and a half years later, I had a breast cancer recurrence in my chest wall.

Dnipro, Ukraine CNN —The residential block in Dnipro looked like someone had taken a huge bite out of it. Their presence was a sign of how Ukrainians have become used to the realities of living through a war. Tsyplionkova said she considered leaving Dnipro after the war started but found she simply couldn’t go: this is her city. Lydmila Lashko, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, says two years of war have forced Ukrainians to get used to its brutal realities. “But eventually one gets used to everything.”Some 4.8 million Ukrainians are officially registered as internally displaced people, according to data from Ukraine’s Ministry of Social Policy.

Two weeks after giving birth to her eighth child, Ms. Neeleman, 33, said she no longer needed to wear postpartum diapers. That was convenient, since she was about to take part in the swimsuit round of the Mrs. World beauty pageant, an annual competition for married women from around the globe. “A lot of us have kids, and I don’t think there’s any shame in showing I just had a baby,” Ms. Neeleman said. “Like, I’m not going to have a perfectly flat stomach.” The beauty team draped a blanket over the infant, Flora Jo. “She’s breathed in a lot of hair spray,” she joked, “but other than that she’s stayed safe.”

Barely two hours after the lapse of a week-old truce between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, Gaza's Hamas-controlled health ministry reported that 32 people had already been killed in Israeli air strikes. Reuters footage from Nasser Hospital, the second largest in the Gaza strip, showed a steady stream of wounded children and adults being brought in as other people wept outside beside bodies of loved ones killed in strikes. "Gaza's health system has been crippled by the ongoing hostilities," Dr Richard Peeperkorn, the World Health Organisation's representative in Gaza, said. "It cannot afford to lose any more hospitals or hospital beds," he told reporters by video link.

In August 1944, in a city near Paris, Robert Capa took a photograph of a woman cradling a baby in the middle of a jeering crowd, her head shaved and her forehead marked with a swastika. A novel released in France this summer has reinvented her once again, this time as a woman scorned. It’s a reinvention that is a disservice to the complicated truth about Ms. Touseau and her and other Frenchwomen’s deliberate collaboration with the Nazis. A reality we should contemplate frankly if we’re to have a proper accounting of the history of the war in France. The photograph, “The Shaved Woman of Chartres,” with the young Ms. Touseau at its center, was understood for a long time as a document of the brutal purges that took place during the liberation of France at the end of World War II.

The assault that forced the evacuation of the hospital and left dozens of homes ablaze was blamed on the Brooklyn gang. Previous attacks in Cite Soleil and other areas have left hundreds of civilians dead as gangs pillage communities, raping and killing people inside their homes. During the recent clashes in the sprawling seaside slum that led up to Wednesday’s attack, gangs could be seen traveling by boat to surprise and kill rival gang members, Ulysse said. Then, after everyone inside the hospital grew quiet, she heard gangs outside arguing whether or not to burn the facility. Those interviewed praised the police and Ulysse, who pleaded for help via social media as the facility came under attack.

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — A flurry of Israeli airstrikes Tuesday on a refugee camp near Gaza City leveled apartment buildings, leaving craters where they once stood, as ground troops battled Hamas militants across northern Gaza and attacked underground compounds. Larger ground operations have been launched north and east of Gaza City. Jonathan Conricus, an Israeli military spokesman, called Gaza City the “center of gravity of Hamas" but said strikes continue in other parts of the territory. Hamas released its own video showing what it said was a battle in northern Gaza on Sunday. Zaki Abdel-Hay, a Palestinian living a few minutes' walk from the road south of Gaza City, said people are afraid to use it.

As well as the Israeli military's pictures of tanks, some images online appeared to show Israeli soldiers waving an Israeli flag deep inside Gaza. Hamas said it was firing mortars against Israeli forces in north Gaza and had hit Israeli tanks with missiles, belittling reports of deep advances by its enemy. Medical authorities in the Gaza Strip, which has a population of 2.3 million people, said on Sunday 8,005 people - including 3,324 minors - had been killed. They later said their fighters had clashed with Israeli forces northwest of Gaza and had also set fire to two Israeli tanks. Israel has accused Hamas of locating command centres and other military infrastructure in Gaza hospitals, something the group denies.

Getting Dressed with Beenslackin

A fit pic provocateur, full-time flaneur and occasional stylist, Beenslackin, 24, was born Menelik Demissie in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and moved to Brookline, Mass. Over the last three years, he’s made a name as a street-level avant-gardist, dressing in chaotically ecstatic single-designer outfits (Rick Owens, Margiela, Louis Vuitton and, most recently, Balenciaga and Vetements) with ease, confidence and, crucially, a lack of preciousness. His natural gift with unnatural silhouettes has earned the admiration of Lil Uzi Vert among others, and lately he’s been extending his experimentation to the body itself. You can find him stomping around downtown, pant hems dragging and decaying behind him, sometimes cradling his tiny dog, Keiko. This interview has been edited and condensed.

Willie Kirk's second-place side have seven points from three games, level with leaders Manchester City, who thrashed Bristol City 5-0, and also with title holders Chelsea who beat West Ham United 2-0 on Saturday. Captain Aileen Whelan struck at the far post from a freekick in the 60th minute to give Leicester a surprise lead, having frustrated their hosts for an hour. However, defender Maya Le Tissier equalised seven minutes later when she headed home Katie Zelem's corner to the delight of the home fans. Leicester have been a revelation early this campaign, unbeaten in their first three games after a 10th-place finish last season. The 30-year-old said in an Instagram post that the jersey sold out on Monday, the same day it was released.

Camper English’s obsession with ice began with its opposite: boiling water. To Mr. English, this was an unacceptable situation. “I was trying to confirm or disprove theories on making clear ice that I had been hearing from bartenders,” he said. Now, with Mr. English’s new tome, “The Ice Book,” out May 23 from Red Lightning Books, he’s made it possible for every cocktail enthusiast to master clear-ice at home. Mr. English had always heard that an easy way to achieve clear ice was to boil the water before freezing it.
Serena Williams has resisted saying publicly that she has retired from tennis and the finality that would bring, but now she has another reason to stay away from competition in the near future. Amid the costume-themed glitz of the Met Gala on Monday night Williams announced, both on the red carpet and on social media, that she was pregnant with her second child. She attended the event with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, a co-founder of Reddit, and said in a post on Instagram that she “was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala.”On the red carpet before the event, Ohanian put his hand on his wife’s stomach in a gesture indicating a pregnancy. Williams also posted a series of portraits that included an image of her cradling her stomach with both hands.
Ed Sheeran Defends Himself in Court, With His Guitar

Ed Sheeran testified with a guitar on Thursday at a closely watched copyright trial, defending his hit ballad “Thinking Out Loud” against an accusation that he had copied it from Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”Cradling his acoustic instrument in a federal courtroom in Manhattan, Mr. Sheeran demonstrated the four-chord sequence at the heart of his song, which he said was written in a few hours in early 2014 with his friend and longtime collaborator Amy Wadge. He recounted just stepping out of the shower of his home when he heard Ms. Wadge strumming the chords, and he remembered thinking: “We need to do something with that.”The song went to No. 1 in Britain and No. 2 in the United States, and in 2016 won a Grammy Award for song of the year. But in 2017, the family of Ed Townsend, Gaye’s co-writer, sued for copyright infringement, saying that the chord progression, with its syncopated pattern, was copied from “Let’s Get It On.”Mr. Sheeran has been a regular presence at the trial, which began on Monday in Federal District Court in Manhattan, listening to the testimony of his accusers, who include Kathryn Griffin Townsend, Mr. Townsend’s daughter.

Bankrupt Alex Jones owes almost $1.5 billion in court-awarded damages to Sandy Hook families. His wife shared a video of him on Thursday complaining that authorities want to take his cat. Jones' wife, Erika Wulff Jones, posted a bizarre video on Twitter on Thursday of her husband complaining about the authorities' attitude towards the pet. "They were very serious about the cat and its value, and they may want the cat for the Sandy Hook families," he said. Jones' personal bankruptcy has so far protected him from paying out defamation judgments and creditor collection efforts, but he is required to list all the personal and household items he owns.
